Class NGG 11 2nd Order Diagram

The Class NGG 11’s were the first narrow gauge Garratts built for use by the SAR.  The three Class NGG 11 2-6-0+0-6-2 Garratt locomotives of the 1st order, No.’s 51, 52 and 53 where built by Beyer, Peacock and Co and erected in the Uitenhage workshops in 1920.  No. 51 was put to work on the Avontuur line and No. 52 and 53 were sent to the Ixopo branch, No. 51 however followed soon afterwards.  No. 51 was returned to the Avontuur line in 1945 to replace No. 5 as the yard shunter.  No. 51 and 53 were scrapped in the 1960’s and No. 52 was sold to Rustenberg Platinum mines to become their No. 7 and is preserved as a static exhibit in Gauteng.

The 1st order locomotives use saturated steam and slide valves, whilst the 2nd order locomotives have superheated steam, piston valves and better cabs, but retain many interchangeable components with the 1st order locomotives.

No. 54 and 55 of the 2nd order were also built by Beyer, Peacock and Co and placed in service in 1925, also on the Ixopo branch.  They were later transferred to the Estcourt – Weenen branch when replaced by Class NGG 16’s.  Both locomotives were exchanged for a pair of Class NGG 13’s and sent to the Avontuur line.  No. 54 is preserved in use at Humewood Road on the Avontuur line and No. 55 is currently preserved as a static exhibit in Weenen.
