Class NG 3 Diagram

The six Class NG 3 4-6-2T locomotives were designed by D.A. Hendrie for the Stuartstown Railway (Ixopo branch under the SAR).  These locomotives were similar to the two locomotives already in service on the Estcourt – Weenen line.  They were built by Hawthorn, Leslie and Co in 1907 and where numbered 3 to 9.  They where capable of hauling 90 tons for 24 axles up 1 in 33 grades.  In 1915 No.’s 4, 6 and 9 where sent to South West Africa to assist in the campaign due the shortage of locomotives there.  By 1932 only No.’s 4, 5, 8 and 9 where left.  In 1939 number 5 was sent to Humewood Road to be the shed loco, she became the last NG 3 in service on the SAR and was sold in 1946.
